What is the process?
I first remove the caulk (if any) surrounding the bathtub. For porcelain bathtubs I acid wash the tub which removes the shine from the old surface making it rough and bond-able. For Fiberglass bathtubs I sand every square inch of the tub to make it rough and bond-able. I then apply one coat of quality aerospace epoxy primer and then three coats of high gloss acrylic polyurethane enamel which contains a sunscreen agent that prevents the finish from yellowing over time. Professional spray equipment is used similar to what is used in auto body shops. I can also replace your bathtub drain and overflow plate as well as apply a non-slip texture to the bottom of the tub.
How long is the warranty?
The warranty is 5 years for owner occupied homes and 1 year for rental properties. This basically covers it against any peeling. Chipping, faucet leak damage, bath mat damage, improper cleaning, or other abuse is not covered by the guarantee. Any caulking done is also not covered. The bathtub will outlive the warranty for many years if properly maintained! You will be provided a care sheet that explains how to care for your bathtub.
What precautions are taken to protect the bathroom?
Vanity and toilet areas are completely covered with plastic. Tarps cover every square inch of the floor. If there is a window in the bathroom an exhaust fan will go in the window. If there is not a window in the bathroom an exhaust system is setup and goes out a nearby window or door. Plastic also goes over the doorway to the bathroom so that all dust stays in the bathroom and goes out the exhaust system.
How long does the refinishing process take?
For just a standard bathtub between 4 and 7 hours depending on the condition of the bathtub.
For a standard bathtub including a tile tub surround it depends on the condition of the tile. If the tile is in overall good condition it can be done in one full 7 to 9 hour day. For tile that is in need of extensive crack and grout repairs it can take two 5 or 6 hour days. One day to prep and do repair work and another day to spray it and finish up.
Fiberglass bathtubs between 6 and 9 hours depending on the condition of the bathtub.
Clawfoot bathtubs that need completely refinished inside and out is usually a 2 day process.
How long before the bathtub can be used?
The bathtub surface needs to sit for 24 hours. If much caulking was done the caulk will need 30 hours to dry.
